Session 6 was an exciting time for both Mentor/Tutors and second graders as they prepared their accomplishments to share with parents, family and friends at the program’s Saturday library celebration. The books that the second graders had authored and illustrated as part of the program with the help of LOCA artists, Valerie Gorrell and Linda Velasco, had to be completed. A drawing with accompanying written description had to be selected so each child could present it to the library’s audience. In the “You Are A Special You” book Dachshunds are the dogs represented in the illustrations and a photo of Cricket and Serena, the book’s two Dachshunds, were the invitation card that had to be threaded and placed around each child’s neck so each parent would receive it. The seconder graders, in a circle, practiced reading with Madeleine Peterson, AAUW Reading Consultant, the Special You book together for their Saturday presentation. The last activity was lining up for their group picture that Stephany Skenderian captured with her Iphone from which she made copies and gave to each Mentor/Tutor at the final event.
